Forget About Us

Propulsive rhythms, cheerful guitar riffs, belting vocals—the recipe for cooking up a self-titled debut solo album from Little Mix alum Perrie Edwards makes use of all these ingredients. With Edwards working alongside a healthy helping of cream from the hit songwriter crop—Maegan Cottone (Little Mix, Kylie Minogue), Plested (Lewis Capaldi, Jonas Brothers), and Ed Drewett (One Direction) are among the names credited—Perrie plays out like a master class in folk-influenced pop.
Opening with the one-two punch of sentimental Ed Sheeran co-write “Forget About Us” and the wry, he’s-just-not-that-into-you wisdom of “If He Wanted to He Would,” Edwards strikes a plain-talking, open-hearted chord that resonates throughout the entire album. “Rocket Scientist” builds up a scene of romantic disconnection into a charged anthemic chorus; “Punchline” soundtracks a sardonic look on the bright side of life’s trials and tribulations with polished funk production; the midtempo “Absofuckinglutely” narrates a marriage proposal that receives an unambiguously emphatic response. The album’s most intriguing moments however, veer away from stomp-clap optimism and waggish lyrics to maximize Edwards’ undeniable vocal talents. While the light and breezy cuts on Perrie go down easy, the standouts are “Goodbye My Friend” and “Miss You”—a sensational R&B ballad penned with Tre Jean-Marie and MNEK—both of which call to mind early-career Mariah Carey.
Lyrics
[Intro]
I don't want you ever to forget about us
(Forget about us)
[Verse 1]
I heard you fell in love with somebody new
I know you heard that I found someone too
So you blew up and I'm proud of you
But I don't wanna hear those songs no more, yeah
[Pre-Chorus]
Do you remember the way we fell in?
Like everything froze with just one glance then
From Heaven and nothin', it feels like hell, well
Here's the truth of it
[Chorus]
I don't want you ever to forget about us in the front sеat
Listenin' to songs that made you think about me
Bonfirе smoke on your hoodie that I stole from your flat
No, I never gave it back, but
[Post-Chorus]
I don't want you ever to forget about us
(Forget about us)
[Verse 2]
I've felt more love since you for sure (Ah, ah-ah)
And I don't wanna go back to where we were before (Ah, ah-ah)
But when I hear your name, it's still so raw (Ah, ah-ah)
Do you ever feel the same way too? Yeah
[Pre-Chorus]
Do you remember the way we fell in?
Like everything froze with just one glance then
From Heaven and nothin', it feels like hell, well
Here's the truth of it
[Chorus]
I don't want you ever to forget about us in the front seat
Listenin' to songs that made you think about me
Bonfire smoke on your hoodie that I stole from your flat
No, I never gave it back, but
I don't want you ever to forget about us
I know we were never perfect, but I think about the life we never had (Had)
Yeah, we both found different love, and we're movin' on
Let's leave it buried where it was, but
[Post-Chorus]
I don't want you ever to forget about us (To forget, ah, ah)
Forget about us
I don't want you ever to forget about us (Ah, ah)
Forget about us
Yeah
[Bridge]
Do you remember the way we fell in?
Like everything froze with just one glance then
From Heaven and nothin', it feels like hell, well
Here's the truth of it
[Chorus]
I don't want you ever to forget about us in the front seat
Listenin' to songs that made you think about me
Bonfire smoke on your hoodie that I stole from your flat
No, I never gave it back, but
I don't want you ever to forget about us
I know we were never perfect, but I think about the life we never had
Yeah, we both found different love, and we're movin' on
Let's leave it buried where it was, but
[Post-Chorus]
I don't want you ever to forget about us (To forget, ah, ah)
Forget about us
I don't want you ever to forget about us (Ah, ah)
Forget about us
